What is a health coach? https://kaitmccarthywellness.com/2019/01/09/what-is-a-health-coach/ Wed, 09 Jan 2019 17:43:00 +0000 http://kaitmccarthywellness.com/?p=792 What the heck is a health coach anyway?!

Two years ago I had no idea what a health coach was! I had seen the title used in various places but I didn’t know exactly what it meant. Once I decided to use my health journey to help others I started researching how to spread the message and health coaching certification programs started popping up. I was intrigued so I looked into several schools and eventually ended up enrolling at IIN or the Institute for Integrative Nutrition which is based out of NYC.

According to The Institute for Integrative Nutrition  a certified Health Coach is a supportive mentor and wellness authority helping clients feel their best through food & lifestyle changes by tailoring individualized wellness programs to meet their clients’ needs.

What makes a health coach unique?

A health coach uses an holistic approach to wellness. According to dictionary.com holistic medicine is
characterized by the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the symptoms of a disease. With a holistic approach in mind Certified Health Coaches customize a program to help their clients set and follow through on health and wellness related goals incorporating factors such as home environment, relationships, joy, career and finances.

What a health coach is not:

Someone who sells a product.

I see this so often and as someone who paid a generous amount and spent countless hours studying for a full year it’s a little discouraging to have people use the title health coach just because they sell a weight loss product.

A dietitian

A dietitian is an expert in food and nutrition to help manage disease. They receive a batchelors degree, complete an internship and get licensed in the state they practice in. Unlike a health coach, a dietition can recommend specific dietary guidelines based on the individual’s needs.

My Health Coaching Philosophy

In school we are encouraged to narrow down our audience to a target market. This can be diabetes, weight loss, autoimmune disease, etc. I knew early on that my passion was to help fellow moms on their health and wellness journeys. With that in mind I have customized the curriculum at IIN to apply to mothers who are trying to incorporate health and wellness goals while juggling all of the other areas of motherhood.

Most women are looking to loss weight and gain more energy but they are often focusing on the wrong areas. Diet and exercise are both important in a health journey but if they are the only areas we are exploring we aren’t going to see good results at least not in the long term. As women our bodies are very different from males. We hold onto weight (or lose too much weight) when our hormones are out of balance and guess what messes with your hormones?

If you guessed chronic stress then you would be right! Cluttered homes, hectic schedules, toxic relationships, out of control finances and/or lack of self care is causing women chronic stress. Our bodies are stuck in fight or flight mode and our hormones are all out of balance because of it.

I want to help you create balance in your lives. Life is tough sometimes but we can choose to live with less stress and more joy!

How can a health coach help you?

If you are struggling to stay committed to your health and wellness goals, a health coach can help you set practical goals and give you the support you need to achieve them. Each health coach brings a unique experience to their coaching practice so be sure to find someone who is a good fit for your personal goals.

Wishing you health and happiness,

Self Care https://kaitmccarthywellness.com/2019/01/01/self-care/ https://kaitmccarthywellness.com/2019/01/01/self-care/#comments Tue, 01 Jan 2019 23:12:57 +0000 http://kaitmccarthywellness.com/?p=702 Self-care is a big buzz word right now but what does it really even mean?

Well, it’s not all manis and pedis and luxury spa treatments. According to oxforddictionaries.com self-care is defined as 1. The practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health. 1.1 The practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.

According to that definition I would say that all mothers need to be practicing more self-care. If we are going to be good moms we need to be making sure that we are putting ourselves on the to-do list. Whether you are a full time working Mama, a work at home Mama or a stay at home Mama your plate is full. We live in a society where we praise busyness and perfectionism and its killing us moms.

So let’s start with mindset. For a long time I was just too busy for this self-care business. I had babies to feed and a house to clean and I already couldn’t keep up so adding anything else to my plate seemed counter productive. That was until I became completely burnt out.

A good friend pointed out that I wasn’t taking very good care of myself and the truth was that it wasn’t helping anyone around me. I was chronically stressed and overwhelmed and knew something had to change. So I started to change my mindset. I realized that self care isn’t selfish but a path for me to become an even better mom, wife and friend.

I started doing simple things like taking long baths and getting out for an occasional solo walk. Then I dug in a little deeper and started setting healthy boundaries in relationships that were becoming toxic. I ditched old negative ideas about myself. I started eating better and working out again. I’m still a work in progress but I can’t imagine where I would be if I hadn’t changed directions.

I want this change for you too! I want you to be set free from the thought that being a mom means that you have to give, give, give and never consider your own needs. That mindset is not sustainable and things will eventually fall apart so don’t wait. Make yourself a priority today!

Affirmations

Use these affirmations to help you change your mindset around self-care. Write them down or print them out in your favorite font and put them on the fridge, in your car or on your bathroom mirror. The more you say them the more you will believe them so say them out loud and say them often!

I am the only person who can take care of me.

My physical, mental and emotional well-being are a top priority.

I am a better mom, wife and friend when I take care of my own needs.

I deserve to make my health a priority.

Schedule it!

Don’t wait for the perfect time to start because it is never going to happen. Determine where you want to start and create a plan. If your goal is to eat nourishing foods schedule a time to meal plan, shop and meal prep once a week. If your goal is to add more movement into your life than sign up for some new classes and put them into your calendar. Whatever it is make sure it is a priority even if that means cancelling other things or moving things around.

At this point you may be thinking but I just don’t have the time. I’m going to give you a little tough love on this one. Make the time. Cancel something that doesn’t line up with your new goals. Go to bed earlier so that you can wake up a little earlier. Create the time. Even if it is just 15 minutes a day to stretch and do some deep breathing it will make a difference. Start making yourself a priority!

Ideas for Self-care

There are a million ways we can make health and wellness a priority in our lives. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • take an epsom salt bath
  • schedule a daily tea time
  • practice deep breathing
  • get a mani/pedi
  • practice yoga
  • take a new class
  • learn a new hobby
  • go to the library and read a book
  • say no to things that you don’t want to do
  • set healthy boundaries
  • eat nourishing foods
  • start a gratitude journal
  • go for a walk
  • have a dance party
  • do a digital detox
  • join a book club
  • get together with a girl friend
  • start a gratitude journal
  • buy yourself flowers
  • do a face mask
  • wear makeup more often
  • take a nap

Keep it simple but make it consistent!

Motherhood Made Whole Challenge https://kaitmccarthywellness.com/2018/12/31/motherhood-made-whole-challenge/ https://kaitmccarthywellness.com/2018/12/31/motherhood-made-whole-challenge/#comments Mon, 31 Dec 2018 21:18:30 +0000 http://kaitmccarthywellness.com/?p=708 Twelve Month-Long Challenges for a Simplified, Healthy Motherhood

Hey Mama! Are you ready to make some positive changes in your life this new year? Are you ready to find better balance and let go of what is holding you back?

Well, I have just the thing for you!

The Motherhood Made Whole Challenge

The Motherhood Made Whole Challenge is broken down into twelve, month-long challenges to improve every area of #momlife. There are no quick fixes or band aids just real solutions for a simplified, healthy motherhood. At the beginning of each month I will put up an Instagram post with the theme for the month and a link to the corresponding blog post to get you started. Each post will include mindset work, goal setting and action steps for that months theme.

I am creating this challenge using the curriculum that I was taught in my year long studies to become a health coach as well as my own experience as a Mom. After my third baby was born I felt completely burnt out and desperate. My anxiety was at an all time high and I was just trying to survive day to day. It didn’t happen overnight but I was able to turn things around by figuring out what was out of balance in my life and working to improve those areas. This goes without saying of course but my life certainly isn’t perfect. I have good days and bad days and everything in between but I can happily say that I am no longer living in survival mode!

I want to set you free from the lie that to be a “good mom” you have to sacrifice everything. I also want to let you know that you don’t have to stay stuck in a cluttered home, constantly go from one activity to the next or put yourself on the back burner for the sake of raising awesome kids. It’s time to take back you motherhood and start thriving once again!

Answer the following questions to find out if this challenge is a good fit for you:

Are you living in survival mode?

Are you constantly overwhelmed?

Do you feel like you can never slow down?

Do you wish you had more time for things that you enjoy?

If you answered yes to any of these questions than this challenge is for you! Don’t go another day feeling miserable in your role as a mom. You are the only one who can make the decision to turn it around but I will be here every step of the way to help guide you.

These are the topics that will be covered in the challenge:

Self-Care

Clutter

Housekeeping

Family Time

Nutrition

Calendar

Friendships

Career

Finances

Hobbies

Marriage

Physical Activity

What does it cost?

The best part of all… it won’t cost you a dime! It will cost you lots of time and energy but I am offering this as a free challenge! I’m very passionate about the idea that healthy living should be for ALL, not just those who can afford to go to yoga or buy fancy supplements. By taking small, sustainable steps we can all live a happier, healthier lifestyle.

The best way to achieve a goal is through accountability so be sure to join my FB Group Motherhood Made Whole Support Group {click here} that I created specifically for this challenge! It is a closed group so you will be able to share your struggles and get feedback and encouragement from women who are working on the same goals along side you.

I do offer one on one coaching as well so feel free to reach out if you would like additional support with your health and wellness goals.

Wishing you health and happiness,

Kaitlyn McCarthy

Chemicals in the Classroom https://kaitmccarthywellness.com/2018/12/12/chemicals-in-the-classroom/ https://kaitmccarthywellness.com/2018/12/12/chemicals-in-the-classroom/#comments Wed, 12 Dec 2018 23:32:35 +0000 http://kaitmccarthywellness.com/?p=683

If you are a parent you have been on the receiving end of the yearly classroom supply list requested at the beginning of each school year! Well, this year my I noticed that my daughters list included Disinfecting Wipes. I got to wondering why each classroom would need nearly twenty canisters of disinfecting wipes so I wrote an email to the teacher inquiring about how the wipes would be used and if I could supply the classroom with a natural based wipe instead. I had assumed they would be used in the event of a flu outbreak or rare vomiting situation.

Well, to my surprise, she responded that she has each of her students wipe down their own desks at the end of each day. Now don’t get me wrong I think it is a great thing to teach students how to clean up after themselves but there are strong warning labels on these products for a reason! Even as an adult you are supposed to wash your hands after use and rinse the area after a certain period of time. After doing some additional research I just wasn’t comfortable with my daughter being around this product on a daily basis and requested that a natural spray be used in its place. Thankfully her teacher agreed and they have been using a plant based, natural cleaning spray ever since!

Before I get into additional details, I wanted to highlight a product that I am sending in to be used in my daughters classroom. Annie’s Pure and Simple is a locally owned business that creates all-natural cleaning products that are safe for children to use. They are made with vinegar, essential oils and distilled water. It is the perfect product for anyone who is intimidated by making their own cleaning products or just wants to take the easy route. Check them out at anniespureandsimple.com. You can pick their products up in many New England stores or order online with free shipping on orders over $20! (this post is not sponsored, I just really like their products and want to share with you all!)

When I first received the teachers email I went into research mode and what I found was that even mainstream information suggested that this was an unsafe practice. I contacted Clorox who responded by saying “No, we do not recommend that kids use the Clorox Disinfectant Wipes. Our product label says Caution: Keep out of reach children.”. I also contacted the Department of Public Health who said they recommend that “green” (I use quotes on green because I would consider them greenwashed products) products be used in schools and that children should no longer be exposed to harsh cleaning products.

According to the Healthyschools.org website they claim that:

“Many popular wipes contain toxic chemicals that can cause immediate acute side effects such as skinand eye irritation, as well as contribute to chronic and long-term conditions.

Disinfecting wipes contain active ingredients that have been found to cause: Asthma (e.g., chlorine bleach/sodium hypochlorite, peroxyacetic acid, quats.) Cancer (e.g., ortho-phenylphenol) Skin sensitization (e.g., chlorine bleach, pine oil, thymol).

Disinfecting chemicals often contain a class of substances called quaternary ammonium compoundsor “quats”. These chemicals are skin irritants, can irritate your lungs, and have been linked to asthma and reproductive harm.

The overuse of antibacterial cleaners can promote antibacterial-resistant bacteria, aka “super-bugs.”

With all that said I would suggest looking into what is being used at your child’s school and even what you are using in your own home. Even some of the so called green products out there use harmful ingredients. I do not buy into the fear mongering but there is mounting evidence that many of the products that we are using on a daily basis are contributing to health issues especially for our children who are much more susceptible due to the fact that they are still developing. There is a time and place for disinfecting but daily use by and around our children is certainly not one of them. As always I suggest that you do your own research!

Wishing you health and happiness,

Kaitlyn McCarthy

A Crunchy Mama’s Summer Essentials Guide https://kaitmccarthywellness.com/2018/05/16/a-crunchy-mamas-summer-essentials-guide/ https://kaitmccarthywellness.com/2018/05/16/a-crunchy-mamas-summer-essentials-guide/#comments Wed, 16 May 2018 20:09:19 +0000 http://kaitmccarthywellness.com/?p=540 Going non-toxic can be overwhelming when you are trying to keep your little ones safe from bugs and uv damage but I’ve got you covered! Here is a list of my favorite products for a fun, safe and non-toxic summer!
(Click on the images for links to purchase through Amazon. As an amazon affiliate if you choose to make a purchase through my link I will receive a very small commission.)

First lets talk bugs! The ticks are bad this year so if you live in an area where ticks are prevalent you’ll want to take every precaution. This year we are using this Cedarcide diy lawn spray and I’m sticking with this tried and true organic EO spray for topical use. The travel size are perfect for throwing into your purse or diaper bag!

Now lets talk sunblock. Most conventional sunblocks have cancer causing chemicals in them which kind of defeats the purpose IMO. So let’s stay clear of the junk and opt for non-nano zinc based sunblock products. If you want more info on why you should avoid conventional products check out this article from the EWG and be sure to use their search option to see how your products hold up. My current fav is this Badger Unscented Clear Zinc. It goes on thick but rubs in quickly and provides great coverage!

Another decent option is this Babo Clear Zinc Spray but you need to thoroughly rub it in and reapply often.

One thing that we do a lot in the summer is take a picnic lunch. For the most part I store everything in glass but that doesn’t always work for the beach and playground. So we have these awesome bentgo boxes that work great for lunch or dinner! For drinks I always use Lifefactory glass water bottles or Thermos stainless steel cups.

(Bentgo Box Link)

Finally here is a list of all of my miscellaneous must haves for a fun non-toxic summer!

For sandy little feet!

#gamechanger for emergency potty trips!

Perfect for dumping sandy beach toys and wet towels in!

This is the easiest tent to set up. I can do it solo with three kids at the beach!
Sunblock Rash Guard in Swedish Yellow - main
Hanna Andersson Rash Guards (click here for 20% off code)

I hope you all have a fun and adventurous summer!

Wishing you health and happiness,

Kaitlyn
