Minimalist Master Bedroom
Its been four years since we purchased our home and we just finally decorated our bedroom!
Research has proven that having a messy house is directly linked to anxiety especially for women. The bedroom should be a place to rest and get restored but often its a place of anxiety. When I realized that our bedroom wasn’t exactly serving us I decided to apply minimalist principles and do a full bedroom makeover.
In order to create a minimalist bedroom my three main goals were:
LIGHT & BRIGHT
Since our bedroom gets limited natural light I wanted to keep everything light and airy. In order to achieve this goal we painted the walls a beautiful griege tone. Then we sold our dark walnut bedroom set and traded it in for a oatmeal linen headboard and bed frame. I brought in lots of white with the bedding, nightstands, light fixtures and seating. Lastly I added plenty of plants to bring life to the room and help keep the air clean.
CLEAR SURFACES
Our old bedroom set had two large dressers and two large three drawer night stands. When we lived in tiny apartments the storage space was great but now that we have two closets it was just creating unnecessary clutter. We moved all of our clothes to the closets and replaced the furniture with just two small nightstands and one small side table. Limited surfaces means they won’t be collecting junk like empty surfaces often do.
FUNCTIONALITY
Before deciding how I wanted to decorate the room I took some time to think about what I wanted to use the room for. Three things came to mind: a place to sit and have quiet time with a cup of coffee, a place to do yoga and a place to get dressed with a large mirror. Before I started incorporating self-care into my routine I would have never have even considered these uses for our bedroom. I wasn’t intentional about the use of the space and just used our room for sleeping and clothes storage. Now our bedroom is a place of peace. It feels like staying a beautiful hotel room {minus the housekeepers} every night!
If your bedroom feels like more of a burden than a place of rest I highly recommend going minimal. You won’t regret it!
You don’t have to spend a lot of money to achieve this goal.
-
Start with purging as much as you can and being intentional with everything you have in your room
-
Find a specific home for each item you choose to keep
-
Let the kids know that Mom and Dad’s room isn’t a place for their toys
-
Add some candles to set a calming mood
-
Sell or donate furniture that is no longer serving you
-
Bring in some plants
Minimalism is not about restricting yourself its about choosing to have only things that you want or need in your home and life. In the words of Joshua Becker “minimalism is the intentional promotion of the things we most value and the removal of anything that distracts from it”.
